Covenant Softball Wins Two Over Berea

The Covenant College softball team hosted a doubleheader against Berea in a midweek conference clash. The Scots had standout performances in both games as they swept the Mountaineers and extended their winning streak to four games. 

Game 1 Final: Covenant 10, Berea 6 Berea took an early 1-0 lead in the first inning using three singles to do so.  Oliva Stefl tied the game at one with a RBI single that scored Mary Elaine Mitchell who led off the bottom of the first with a triple. RBI singles by Helena Nagy and Lakyn Hacker later in the frame put the Scots ahead 3-1. A pair of infield errors on back-to-back plays extended Covenant's lead to 5-1 in the second inning. 

A few batters later, Nagy ripped a RBI double down the left-field line to give Covenant a five-run lead. The Scots scored their seventh run in the third inning via a wild pitch. In the fifth inning, an infield error extended the inning and allowed Berea to piece a few hits together and eventually make it 7-6. Nagy delivered again for the Scots in the sixth inning with a RBI double to left field.
Later in the sixth inning, a 2-RBI single up the middle by Mackenzie Kirby made it 10-6.

Covenant outhit Berea 14-11. Berea committed four errors while Covenant had two. Nagy went 4-for-4 with 3 RBIs to lead the offensive charge. Mitchell with three hits and Hacker with two hits also had impressive games at the plate. Madison Bowden (4.2 IP, 9 H, 6 R, 1 ER, 1 BB, 4 K) earned her second win of the year on the mound. Mackenzie Kirby (2.1 IP, 2 H, 0 ER, 2 BB, 2 K) picked up her first save of the season in relief. 

Game 2 Final: Covenant 6, Berea 0 Taylor Murdock gave the Scots a 1-0 lead in the first inning with a RBI double down the left-field line. Mitchell delivered a 2-RBI single through the right side in the second inning to extend the lead to 3-0. The next batter was Nagy who drove in Mitchell with a RBI single before another run scored on an outfield error to make it 5-0. Murdock scored on a wild pitch in the sixth inning for Covenant's final run of the day. 

Covenant moves to 15-0 all-time against Berea. The Scots outhit the Mountaineers 7-6. Berea committed two errors while Covenant committed one. Murdock and Ashlyn Gaines each had two hits to lead the offense. Valery Baxter (7 Ip, 6 H, 0 ER, 4 K) threw her first complete game and shutout to earn the win in the circle.

Covenant hosts Agnes Scott on Saturday for a doubleheader beginning at noon.
