Lula W. Killebrew, 84, of Chattanooga, peacefully departed from this world on Tuesday, April 2, 2024.

She was born on Jan. 24, 1940, in Sunflower, Ms. to the late Mr. John Williams and Mrs. Clara Williams. Lula W. Killebrew's life was one of remarkable dedication, service, and love. She committed herself to Christ at an early age, setting the foundation for a life filled with faith and devotion. Her impact was felt not only within her church community but also in the broader spheres of education and advocacy.

Throughout her life, Lula exemplified dedication to her church, serving in various capacities such as Choir Member, Superintendent of Sunday School, Missionary Board, Seniors Ministry, and as an avid participant of the Wednesday (Noon) Prayer Meeting Service at Mt. Canaan Baptist Church under the late Pastor Melvin Jordan and later Pastor Dr. Ternae Jordan, Sr. in Chattanooga. Her commitment to her faith was unwavering, and she shared her spiritual gifts generously with those around her.

Lula's devotion extended beyond her religious community; she was also deeply committed to education. As the Valedictorian of Gentry High School's Class of 1957, she already displayed exceptional academic prowess. She pursued higher education, graduating from Mississippi Valley State with a BS Degree in Education. Her passion for learning and teaching became evident as she advocated for education throughout her life, leaving a lasting impact on generations to come.

In her personal life, Lula was deeply cherished by her family and friends. She was preceded in death by her late husband, Mr. Thomas Lee Killebrew, they shared a special bond and after fifty-four years of marriage, he was the love of her life. Lula has now joined her husband in the afterlife. She was also preceded in death by her four brothers; Cleaven Sparks, Alex Sparks, Rufus Sparks, and Israel Williams; and two sisters; Bernice Smith and Bessie Sears.

Lula’s memory will be cherished by her stepdaughters; Janice D. (Arnold) Walker of Ooltewah, TN, and Tracy (Alonzo) Strickland of Chattanooga, TN; three devoted nieces; Diane (Allen) Stokes of Mathews, AL, LaDell (John) Mitchell of Atlanta, GA, and Wenda (Wayne) Johnson of Chattanooga, TN; a host of beloved nieces and nephews, cousins as well as other cherished relatives; five devoted friends; Leola Phelps, Martha White, Roy Lewis, Buel Walker and Bernice Swopes. Two devoted neighbors; Curtis Maxwell and Johnny Rollins all of whom held a special place in her heart. Lula's passing leaves a void in the lives of many who were touched by her kindness, wisdom, and unwavering faith. Yet, her legacy of love, service, and advocacy for education will continue to inspire and uplift generations to come. As the world mourns the loss of this great soldier for humanity, may we also celebrate the profound impact she had on those around her and strive to carry forward her legacy in our own lives.

Lula will lie in state on Saturday, April 13, at 9 a.m. at Taylor Funeral Home. Funeral services will follow at noon in the chapel with Dr. Ternae Jordan, Sr. as the eulogist.
