Mary Cecile Major, 80, of Dayton, Tennessee, went home to be with the Lord on Monday, June 19, 2017.

She was the daughter of the late Ferdinand Humbert and Dorothy Elizabeth Major.  A devout Catholic, Mary lived most of her life in Chattanooga while attending Our Lady of Perpetual Help School, Orange Grove School and lived at the Rhea of Sunshine group home in Dayton.

Mary was blessed with a cheerful, loving disposition which, along with her strong Catholic Faith, helped her though her cancer journey. One of her many doctors paid Mary the tribute of being “everyone’s favorite patient.” We will all miss her sweet smile and mischievous sense of humor.

She was also preceded in death by her brother-in-law, George H. Latta, Jr.

Mary is survived by her sister, Charlotte Lorene Latta of Chattanooga, nephew, Dr. George H. Latta III of Salt Lake City, Ut., nieces, Mary McElhannon of Athens, Ga. and Anne Durden of Bartow, Ga., great-nephews, Jack McElhannon, John Durden, great-nieces, Hannah and Caroline McElhannon, Molly Durden.

The family wishes to send their sincere thanks to Mary’s devoted caregivers at Rhea of Sunshine, especially her special friend Kim Herd and Hospice of Chattanooga for their loving care for Mary.

Funeral Mass will be at 1 p.m. on Friday, June 23, at the Our Lady of Perpetual Help Catholic Church with Father Jim Vick officiating. Interment will follow the service at the Chattanooga National Cemetery. Family will receive friends from 11 a.m. until 12:30 p.m. on Friday at the church.

Arrangements are by Chattanooga Funeral Home Crematory and Florist, East Chapel, 404 S. Moore Rd., East Ridge, Tn. 37412.
