James C. Gaines, 69, died on August 20, 2016, at his home.
He was a graduate of McReynolds High School (South Pittsburg, Tn.) class of 1965. James worked many years as an ironworker and security officer at VA Clinic in Chattanooga. He was a member of Masonic Lodge Zion Hill #249. He served in the U.S. Army, where he served two tours and received two Purple Hearts.
James was of Baptist faith and attended Mt. Calvary Missionary Baptist Church of Wildwood, Ga., where he served as a deacon.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Verlee and Catherine Gaines.
Survivors include his wife, Janie Louise Gaines; children, Jeffrey (Constance) Gaines, Sr., Terrance Gaines, Janelle Gaines ,Eric Gaines, and Zymeria Gaines (daughter/granddaughter), all of Chattanooga; siblings, Walter Gaines, Charles Gaines, Wayne (Darlene) Gaines, all of South Pittsburg, and Vera (George) Glenn, of Jasper; six grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.
The funeral service will be held at 1 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 27, in the chapel at John P. Franklin Funeral Home. Interment will be on Monday, Aug. 29, at 10 a.m. at National Cemetery.
The body will lie in state after noon on Friday, Aug. 26, and the family will receive friends from 6–8 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
