Mayme Kay Hampton Banasiak, 66, of Harrison, died on Monday, July 18, 2016. 

She was born March 2, 1950, in Durham, NC, to her late parents, Arthur Hinton “Pete” and Mayme Yates Hampton.

She was a graduate of Durham High School in Durham, in 1968 and was married to the late Edwin John Banasiak, Jr. on May 31, 1970, for 20 years. She earned a Bachelor of Science in Education (Math) from North Carolina State University in 1972 and a Master of Arts in Education from Tusculum University in 2001. She worked in education for over 30 years, retiring from the University of Tennessee Chattanooga Math Department in 2014.

She was baptized, confirmed in the faith and married at Trinity Avenue Presbyterian Church in Durham. She had been an active member of Northminster Presbyterian Church in Chattanooga since 1983. She was ordained as an elder at Northminster in 1991, sang in the choir, served on the Session, volunteered in multiple ministries, served on several committees with the Presbytery of East Tennessee and had a strong passion for Christian Education.

Survivors include her sons, The Rev. Edwin John “Jay” Banasiak III of Harrison, and Mark Hampton (Rhonda Henson) Banasiak of Clarksville, TN; grandson, Allister Reed Banasiak; sister, Opie Lee Hampton (Michael B.) Anderson of Kenner, LA with many cousins, nieces and nephews.

Visitation will be on Friday, July 22, from 6:30-8:30 p.m., and a memorial service will be on Saturday, July 23, 12:30 p.m., both will be held at Northminster Presbyterian Church. The Reverend Brian Alderman will be officiating.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Mayme Kay’s memory to Northminster Presbyterian Church, 4791 Hal Drive, Chattanooga, TN 37416 or a charity of your choice.
