Ethel Lottie Moore Ulmer, 96, of Chattanooga, died on Sunday, May 22, 2016 at NHC after an extended illness.

Born of the union of William W. and Odelia Richardson Moore, she was the sixth of eight children. She was educated in the public schools of Davidson County (Nashville) and received a Bachelor's of Science in Elementary Education degree in 1942 from Tennessee A & I State College in Nashville.

She met the love of her life, David Elliot Ulmer, Sr. in 1940 and married him in 1947 after he completed a tour of duty after World War II. To this union were born two sons, David E. Ulmer, Jr. and William (Bill) Ulmer.

Ethel was very active in the Chattanooga education community, having taught for 30 years in the Chattanooga Public Schools. She was a proud member of several professional organizations within the profession including Chattanooga Education Association, Tennessee Education Association and the Chattanooga/ Hamilton County Retired Teachers Association.

She was a dedicated member to her church serving in many capacities including Church Clerk for Orchard Knob Baptist Church for twenty six years and the Trustee Wives Ministry. She was a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc., a charter member of The Quettes' Club, an auxiliary to Omega Psi Phi Fraternity, Inc., a charter member of the Smart Set Bridge Club, Tennessee State Alumni Association, and a member of the Diamond Duplicate Bridge Club.

She is survived by her two sons, David Elliot (Angelnetta M.) Ulmer Jr. and William Douglas (Juanita D.) Ulmer, Chattanooga; one grandson, William Davenport Ulmer M.D, Albany, New York; one step granddaughter Kathy Amour, Chattanooga, one step great- granddaughter, Annika Watson, Chattanooga; one sister, Martha Moore Pratt of Chicago, Illinois; four nephews, Joe Moore Jr., Alexander Pratt of Chicago, Illinois, John Moore, Jr. and Darrell Moore, Nashville; devoted niece, Jennifer S. (Terry) Woods; nieces, Avis Campbell, New Roads, Louisiana, Eloise Dyson Prince, George, Virginia, Irene Scruggs-Midgett, Chattanooga, Joyce Bristow, Chicago, Illinois and Wanda Moore, Nashville; a host of great nieces and nephews, other relatives and friends, and extended family members, Mr. and Mrs. Edward Wood.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, May 28, at Orchard Knob Missionary Baptist Church, with Pastor Carlos D. Williams officiating. Interment will take place immediately following the service at 1 p.m. in Chattanooga National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state afternoon on Friday. The Gamma Theta Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority, Inc. will hold its Omega Rho Ceremony at 5:30 p.m. on Friday, and the family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. in the chapel at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
