Another scam has been reported in Bradley County by a citizen who voiced concerns that other people could become a victim of the hoax.
The citizen received a check in the mail for $4,450, the prize he received for winning the “UK & North America Customer Reward Sweepstakes.” The letter had instructions to call a phone number for details on paying the tax liability of $2,800. He realized it was a scam.
Taxes attached to a legitimate prize would be deducted before it is awarded to the recipient.
Sheriff Eric Watson said the sheriff’s office receives calls reporting scams daily.
Most people realize them for what they are and are not taken in.
Many scammers employ scare tactics by threatening imminent arrest unless a payment is made to a specified address.
Citizens are reminded by Sheriff Watson, “If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.”
