Elvin Eugene "Gene" Bishop, born January 2, 1932, in Broad Shoals, Sowers, VA, peacefully departed this life surrounded by loved ones on Friday, April 19, 2024.
Gene was preceded in death by son David Bishop, parents James Clayton and Clara Bishop and siblings Ernest Gray Bishop, Vera Bishop Sales, and James Lloyd Bishop.
Gene was united in marriage to his cherished wife, Nancy Bishop, for a remarkable 69 years. Together, they created a loving family and shared countless memories. Gene's legacy lives on through his devoted children Tammy Bishop Zumbrun, who is married to Eric Zumbrun, and Mark Eugene Bishop, who is married to Carrie Faerber Bishop.
Gene was a loving grandfather to Nick and Sydney Zumbrun. Matt and Naomi Zumbrun, David and Logan Zumbrun, Allie Bishop (Fiance Ryan Coates) and Mollie Bishop, and a doting great-grandfather to Olivia, Sophie, Adley, Annsley, and Rhett Zumbrun.
After graduating from high school in 1949, Elvin answered the call to serve his country and joined the Air Force in 1952. He bravely served in Korea, embodying patriotism and honor throughout his service.
Elvin was not only a man of duty but also a man of intellect, earning a degree in Electrical Engineering from Virginia Tech. After graduation, he accepted a position at TVA, and he and Nancy moved to Chattanooga.
His strong faith in God guided him throughout his life, leading him to dedicate his time to family and service to others. He was deeply involved in Burk's UMC, where he served on numerous committees throughout his 59 years of membership.
Elvin Eugene Bishop will be remembered for his unwavering faith in God, his devotion to his family, his dedication to his country, and his selfless service to others. His memory will forever be cherished by all who had the privilege of knowing him.
Funeral services will be held at 6:30 p.m. on Sunday, April 21, 2024, at Burks United Methodist Church, 6433 Hixson Pike, Hixson, TN 37343 with the Rev. Brian Burch officiating. Family will receive friends from 4 p.m. until time of service Sunday at the church. Interment will be at 1:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 24, 2024, at the Chattanooga National Cemetery with military honors.
