Chattanooga Mocs men’s tennis freshman Jakub Jupa continues to add honors and laurels to his rookie resume after being named this week’s Southern Conference Player of the Week, the league office announced this afternoon.
Jupa, the reigning SoCon Player of the Month, earns his first career SoCon Player of the Week honor and marks the team’s first of the 2024 campaign. Jupa is the first freshman in program history to win the POTW award and UTC’s 14th all-time weekly honoree.
The Kladno, Czech Republic native went a perfect 2-0 last week combined between singles and doubles action at the No.
1 position in both formats. The Mocs battled league-leading and previously nationally ranked Samford in a tight 4-3 defeat on Friday.
Jupa posted a 4-6, 7-5, 6-3 comeback win over Samford’s Maxwell Giddens in the No. 1 singles match to notch his fourth-straight singles victory and fifth in his last six tries. Jupa and teammate Peyton Gatti teamed up for a 6-4 win over the Bulldogs’ Giddens and Sandeep Mohandoss in the No. 1 slot to help the team earn the doubles point on Friday.
For the season, Jupa carries a 15-6 overall record in singles action with a 10-4 mark coming in duals, going 3-0 at No. 1 and 7-4 at No. 2. In doubles, Jupa is a combined 16-9 overall this year with an 8-7 tally in duals which includes a 6-4 record at the No. 1 position, going 6-3 alongside Gatti in No. 1 matchups.
Chattanooga (7-11, 1-1 SoCon) returns to action this coming weekend with a pair of SoCon duals in South Carolina, first taking on Wofford on Friday in Spartanburg before facing Furman in Greenville on Saturday.
