  • Friday, September 21, 2018
The Covenant men's soccer team nearly doubled the amount of shots taken than visiting Averett, but the Scots and Cougars ended in a 0-0 draw on Friday afternoon at Scotland Yard in USA South action.

It was the first overtime match of the year for Covenant (6-2-1, 3-0-1 USA South). In eight meetings all-time between Covenant and Averett the teams have played to a draw three times, including each of the last two matches.

Covenant had opportunities offensively on several occasions during the afternoon.
The Scots outshot Averett 9-8 in the opening period, but Cougars keeper Austin Bramhall made saves on both attempts that were on target.

The Scots opened the second half with a flurry of chances. Covenant took 11 shots in the first 10 minutes of the second half, but was denied each time. Carl Simakoff had a look in the early moment of the half, but his attempt trickled wide of the net. On the ensuing sequence, Jesse Riggs had his shot blocked and Josh Brower came on with an attempt from outside the box, but it was deflected away by the Averett defense.

Bramhall was kept busy by Covenant and finished the match with nine saves.

In the first overtime session, Covenant's Austin Berry had three shots as the Scots continued to be the aggressor. The Scots had two attempts in the final minutes of the second overtime, but Ethan Pettit's final attempt was again saved by Bramhall.

Averett (2-4-1, 0-0-1 USA South) nearly turned the tables on the Scots in the second overtime. In the 107th minute, Leevi Partanen worked up the field on a counter attack and got around a Covenant defender before taking a shot from close range, but Scots keeper Paul Lemay was able to make a sliding save to preserve the tie.

Lemay had six saves on the day as he picked up his second shutout of the year.

Covenant held a 28-15 edge in shots, and 9-6 in shots on goal. Riggs and Brower each took five shots, while Berry and Mercer Stout had four apiece.

Covenant will host Greensboro on Saturday in USA South action. Kickoff is set for 2:30 p.m. at Scotland Yard.
