Senators Author Fix To Keep Families Together

  • Wednesday, June 20, 2018

Senator David Perdue joined his colleagues in introducing a solution to fix current law so families remain together while parents go through immigration proceedings.

“President Trump wants to enforce the law and keep families together, and this bill does both,” said Senator Perdue. “Alternatively, what the Democrats have proposed would incentivize more people to come into our country illegally.

Now is the time for cooperation from both sides in Congress, so we can successfully send a solution to the President’s desk.”

Senator Bob Corker said, “While the issues surrounding our immigration system are complex, we can all agree that innocent children should be protected, and I am hopeful the administration will take executive action to halt the separation of families on our southern border. Congress also must act and provide a longer term solution to the many challenges facing our nation’s immigration system. The Keep Families Together and Enforce the Law Act is an important step in the right direction.”

The legislation was led by Senators Thom Tillis (R-N.C.), Marco Rubio (R-Fl.), Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.), Ron Johnson (R-Wi.), Tom Cotton (R-Ar.), John Cornyn (R-Texas), Ted Cruz (R-Texas), and Dean Heller (R-Ne.) and originally cosponsored by Corker and Senators Chuck Grassley (R-Iowa), James Lankford (R-Ok.), Deb Fischer (R-Ne.), Joni Ernst (R-Iowa), Jerry Moran (R-Ks.), Ben Sasse (R-Ne.), Pat Roberts (R-Ks.), Steve Daines (R-Mt.), Johnny Isakson (R-Ga.), Jeff Flake (R-Az.), Orrin Hatch (R-Utah), Jim Inhofe (R-Okl), John Thune (R-S.D.), Mike Crapo (R-Idaho), John Boozman (R-Ar.), Rob Portman (R-Ohio), and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.).
