The Covenant women’s soccer team tied the match early in the second half, but a goal in the 83rd minute lifted host Piedmont to a 2-1 USA South victory on Saturday afternoon in Demorest.

It is the sixth straight time that the two teams have played to a one-goal decision.
The loss is the second straight for Covenant (4-3, 0-1 USA South) and is the first conference-opening loss for the Lady Scots since joining the USA South.

Trailing 1-0 at the half, Covenant found the equalizer early in the second half. The lone Lady Scots goal was scored by Kyra Duble and assisted on by Addy Cronan in the 58th minute of play. The goal was Duble’s second of the year, and the assist was Cronan’s team-leading third of the year.

The game-winning Piedmont (6-0-1, 1-0 USA South) goal was headed in by Savannah Castles after Tori Gillett fired in a successful corner kick to the box in the 83rd minute. Piedmont took a 1-0 lead when Cassidy Reich scored in the fifth minute of the contest. Reich is the Piedmont leader in points and is now tied the team lead in goals on the season with four.

Covenant could only manage three total shots in the game. Two of the three shots were on goal, but they could not break through to tie the match a second time as Piedmont keeper Miranda McNalley made one save. Lady Scots keeper Rachel Lemay faced eight total Piedmont shots, recording three saves.

Overall, Piedmont held an 8-3 edge in total shots in the defensive contest. Lizzy Hightower took two shots to lead Covenant, including one that hit off the crossbar in the 74th minute.
