St. Luke United Methodist Church will host a memorial concert to honor the life and legacy of the late Booker T. Scruggs II. The concert will be held on Oct. 1 at 3 p.m. in the sanctuary of St. Luke United Methodist Church, 3210 Social Circle. The event, just one day before what would have been Mr. Scruggs 75th birthday, is free and open to the public. The BTS (Booker T. Scruggs) Ensemble will perform.
"We're hosting this event because we love Booker and miss him dearly” said St. Luke United Methodist Church Reverend Evelyn Harris. “The whole city is still reeling from his loss. As as we move forward we hope to continue to honor the man who had so much influence on our lives, while celebrating his enduring legacy as it lives on in each of us who knew and loved him."
Though an active member of Bethlehem-Wiley United Methodist Church, Mr. Scruggs also spent much time at St. Luke United Methodist where he recorded a live album, A Music Garden, and performed with his ensemble on many occasions, including his last performance on June 4.
"A talented musician, Booker played clarinet and saxophone on a total of six albums. He was a member of several area musical groups. He performed around Chattanooga, across the nation, and even internationally. Booker was also a beloved adjunct sociology professor at UTC, a local television talk show host, and long-time champion of Upward Bound. He is surely missed by many people, near and far," officials said.
