U.S. Senator Lamar Alexander, chairman of the Senate Energy and Water Appropriations subcommittee, welcomed Secretary of Energy Rick Perry to Oak Ridge on Monday where they toured the Y-12 National Security Complex, Oak Ridge National Laboratory and the Manufacturing Demonstration Facility. Congressman Chuck Fleischmann also attended.
"Today, we welcomed Secretary Perry to Oak Ridge," said Senator Alexander. "He’s a good manager and a good learner—and he spent today learning a lot about Oak Ridge. We here know that Oak Ridge means thousands of jobs for us and higher family incomes.
"We know it also means for the country higher family incomes and keeping us safe. We both saw the importance of the defense capabilities here and the job-creating capabilities. We’ve seen the materials researched, and we’ve seen the fastest computers in the world. We’ve seen some of the best research and innovative research on advanced manufacturing. All of those things make us very proud of Oak Ridge.
"I’m especially proud, and all of us are grateful to Secretary Perry, and that he took time to make Oak Ridge a priority so early in his term as Energy Secretary."
The Omnibus Appropriations bill, which included the final version of the Fiscal Year 2017 Energy and Water Development Appropriations bill, provided approximately $3 billion in funding for programs at Oak Ridge. The bill was signed into law on May 5.
