A new Chattanooga chapter of the League of Women Voters of Tennessee is holding an organizational meeting on Thursday, April 6, 6:30-8 p.m. at the Edney Building in downtown Chattanooga, 1100 Market Street. Marian Ott, president of the League of Women Voters of Tennessee, will give a presentation on the League and its work. The public is invited, and snacks will be served.
"League of Women Voters has seen a surge in the number of members in the last year. Membership in the League of Women Voters of the US is up by thousands, and the League of Women Voters of Tennessee has also seen an increase in member numbers. The League is open to any person who subscribes to its purpose and policies, and both men and women are welcome to become members," officials said. "In February of this year, the League of Women Voters of Tennessee, in partnership with the Chattanooga Women’s Leadership Institute and the Women’s Fund of Greater Chattanooga, offered a workshop on legislative advocacy skills in Chattanooga. More than sixty people attended, and the majority of them expressed interest in having a Chattanooga chapter of the League."
According to Lisa Bilbrey Hyder, an Ooltewah resident helping to organize the group, “Citizens informing themselves on issues and working to influence public policy is vital to democracy. I’m excited about bringing the League of Women Voters to Chattanooga because it’s a grassroots organization that gets things done.”
