Local High School Sophomore To Publish Debut Novel

  • Monday, January 23, 2017

Emily Pérez, a fifteen-year-old high school sophomore from Signal Mountain, will be publishing her debut novel this month. Yesterday She Was Tiffany by Word One Publishing, is $10.99 in paperback and $7.99 ebook, and is now on sale.

Review for Yesterday She Was Tiffany:

The book a young adult thriller that follows the unraveling of the life of Ophelia Ingalls, an overachieving high schooler, as her reality warps around her. Part horror and part psychological thriller, Yesterday She Was Tiffany explores the pressures of success and the fragility of reality in a way that will keep readers hooked until the very last page.

Sixteen-year-old Ophelia is not your average teenager. Her grades are the highest in her class, and with everything she has going for her, Ophelia is bound for success. But her life gets turned around when strange things begin happening . . . things that don’t make sense. Even weirder, Ophelia is the only one who seems to notice them. As Ophelia’s world gets more confusing, dangerous, and terrifying, she begins to wonder if she’s dreaming or losing her once-brilliant mind. With so much at stake, she decides to take matters into her own hands—and things go devastatingly wrong.

Ms. Pérez herself knows what it means to be a high achiever. “My friend group is quite a bit like Ophelia,” Ms. Pérez explained. “We have 4.0 grade point averages, take the hardest possible classes . . . and have lots and lots of stress.” That drive inspired Ms. Pérez to write Yesterday She Was Tiffany during National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo) in 2015.

Inspired by Tim Burton and Stephen King, Ms. Pérez set out to write a book that kept readers guessing until the very end. “I had an idea for the ending even before I had the whole book planned out,” Ms. Pérez said.

Ms. Pérez wanted her community to be involved in the publishing process, so she used Kickstarter, the online crowdfunding platform, to publish her book. She successfully beat her goal in less than 30 days. “If you had told me I would raise more than $6,000 to publish my book, I probably wouldn't have believed you. And yet here I am, and here we are,” Ms. Pérez said.
