For GPS junior Lily Hopping to score the match-winning goal against visiting Baylor Tuesday night was exciting.

To help celebrate the 2-1 DII Middle/East Region soccer win on her birthday made it special.

The Bruisers (9-1-2, 3-0-2) led 2-0 on goals by Lane Lawrence (12:35) and Hopping (49:50) before Baylor’s Lainee Bohannon slipped one past GPS goalkeeper Avery Campbell (73:08) with less than 10 minutes to play.

“This was not a very good game for us, but we will take the win,” said GPS coach Patrick Winecoff.

“We have been averaging four goals a game so when we went up 2-0 I thought we would score more. But give Baylor credit as they do a great job organizing their back line.”

In a fast-paced, entertaining match, GPS led in shots (16-13), while Baylor had the edge in corner kicks (5-4).

“We created scoring chances early, but could not get the ball to go in,” said Baylor coach Curtis Blair.

“Our players had good energy during the match, but we have to continue to do the small things better.”

Importance of Set Plays: The Bruisers’ first goal came on a free kick by Sara Corum from midfield to Lawrence who scored from 10 yards out.

GPS Birthdays: Junior Lily Hopping and sophomore Myra Brock celebrated birthdays Tuesday.
