The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga women’s soccer team fell 4-0 to Furman Friday night in Greenville, S.C., in the Southern Conference opener for both teams. UTC drops to 2-7-1 on the year and 0-1 in conference play while the Paladins improve to 7-1-1 overall and 1-0 in league action.
The Paladins got goals from four different scorers with two in each half. The first came off the foot of Treva Aycock into the left side from 18 yards out in the 21st minute for her first goal of the year.
Kristian Leone headed in a corner kick from Arianna Milicia at the 41: 19 mark of the game to make it 2-0. That score would stand into the half.
“Furman overwhelmed us,” Chattanooga head coach Gavin McKinney said. “We had to perform at our best tonight to get a results, and we clearly did not.”
Furman’s Carlie Couch put in her sixth goal of the year when she snatched the ball from the Mocs’ back line and got past Chattanooga freshman keeper Melia Correa (Clarksville, Tenn.) to score into an empty net to make it 3-0 in the 54th minute.
The final goal was a shot from the league-leading scorer Molly Dwyer off a pass from Aycock into the far side with 58:39 gone in the match to make it 4-0.
Chattanooga had five shots on the night with a pair from freshman Anna Moore () and one apiece from junior Ellie Myrick (Knoxville, Tenn.), freshman Hannah Torbett (Johnson City, Tenn.) and junior Emily Moesely (Nashville, Tenn.) with all four recording a shot on goal.
Correa made six saves on the night with Furman outshooting the Mocs 24-5. The Paladins’ keepers split their time in the net with Kellsey Weaver making three saves in 45 minutes and Rose Hull had one.
“We must be a better team from here on out,” McKinney said. “We still have plenty to play for and we will keep working to improve our performance.”
