The Chattanooga Times Free Press said it is adding three new periodic publications as inserts for home subscribers.

The newspaper, which is among papers across the country seeking to hold onto print subscribers in the face of the availability of immediate digital news, also will add a charge for "Premium Editions."

Carroll Duckworth, circulation director, said in a letter to subscribers, "Changes have been made to your subscription terms including additional charges for "Premium Editions".

"Home delivery print subscriptions include Premium Editions (i.e. Thanksgiving Day) with total related charges not to exceed $12 annually. Account will be charged additionally up to $5 for each Premium Edition publishing in billing period."

He said, "Premium Editions may be a newspaper with enhanced editorial and/or advertising content such as Thanksgiving Day or special sections included within the daily paper.

"Premium Edition fees are not included in subscription price and will be corrected by adjusting expiration date."

Concerning the inserts, he said, "As part of our commitment to maximize the value of your subscription, we are adding three new publications to home delivery beginning in August at no additional cost:

"1. Community Table American Profile, publishing 24 Fridays a year, will offer value-minded, busy families simple solutions for making everyday life easier, more meaningful and more fun.

"2. Athlon Sports and Life, publishing 10 Wednesdays a year, will become sports fans' better living playbook with engaging features on everything from food, travel, the outdoors, health, fashion and must-have tools to better their busy lives.

"3. Spry Living, publishing 12 Wednesdays a year, will offer inspiration, advice and resources for readers committed to leading a life full of vitality, energy and confidence."

Publisher Walter Hussman said earlier in a full-page announcement that advertising was not sustaining the newspaper as it once did. and that readers would need to pay more for subscriptions.

Subscription rates were increased sharply, but a number of subscribers said they have been allowed to continue getting the print paper delivered at a lower rate when they said they were not willing to pay the higher charge or were unable to do so.
