A man who spent most of his 20s in Georgia state prison is headed to federal prison at age 30.
Leighton L. Dunn on Friday was sentenced by Judge Travis McDonough to serve 58 months for being a felon in possession of a gun during a carjacking.
Dunn told the judge, "I was released in March (2015) and was doing good, then I fell in that same rut. Before I knew it I was caught up. I was back."
Judge McDonough said Dunn could have made more money working a day or two a week than he could stealing cars.
He said, "It's time to find a new profession."
On Aug. 13, 2015, at 9:30 p.m., Chattanooga police spotted a white Chevrolet Silverado traveling south on Rossville Boulevard. Officers had just received a call to be on the lookout for a stolen white 2015 truck.
Officers began to follow the vehicle, and the truck crashed into a pole
Dunn tried to run, but two officers apprehended him as he tried to roll under a trailer.
A loaded 22 caliber revolver was found under the driver's side of the truck.
He admitted stealing the truck and said the gun was his.
Dunn told police he had the gun for protection in case he was confronted while stealing vehicles.
Prosecutor Jay Wood said Dunn was convicted in 2005 for a violent aggravated robbery in Georgia.
