McMinn County Man Charged In Murder Of His Father, Attempted Murder Of His Mother

A joint investigation conducted by  special agents with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and two other agencies has resulted in the arrest of an Englewood man on charges of killing his father and assaulting his mother.

At the request of 10th District Attorney General Steve Crump, TBI special agents, working alongside detectives with the Englewood Police Department and Investigative Division of the District Attorney General’s Office, began investigating the death of Phillip Elrod and the assault of his wife Teresa.

The investigation revealed the couple had sustained stab wounds after being assaulted Sunday morning at their residence at 613 Dixson Avenue in Englewood. Both were airlifted to the UT Medical Center in Knoxville. Phillip Elrod, 61, died of his injuries. Teresa Elrod, 53, continues to be treated for her injuries.

During the course of the investigation, agents developed information that led them to the couple’s son, Michael James Elrod, as the individual responsible for the attacks.

Michael Elrod, 29, was arrested and charged with one count of second-degree murder and one count of attempted second-degree murder.

He was booked into the McMinn County Jail, where he is being held on a $300,000 bond.
