The County Commission on Wednesday gave one-year contract extensions to Randy Russell and Sharetta Smith.

The commission was also set to continue Mr. Russell as the chief magistrate.

However, commissioners said other magistrates should have the right to apply.

That vote was postponed until next week.

The chief magistrate makes $5,000 more than the other three magistrates - Ms. Smith, Ron Powers and Nathaniel Goggans.

Commissioner Joe Graham said when he first was elected that the magistrate program was "a real headache." However, he said he now gets few calls of complaint.
