Outdoor Chattanooga Winter Workshop Series Jan-March 2016

Outdoor Chattanooga's Winter Workshop Series are FREE classroom based seminars and workshops designed to educate and inspire the public to be confident to get outdoors. The workshops cover a variety of topics and occur on Thursdays from 6 - 7:30 p.m. beginning January 14 and running through March 3 at Outdoor Chattanooga, 200 River St. Click on the links below for workshop descriptions and plan to come play with us (indoors through the winter months)!

February 11:  An American Ascent Film Screening

The Office of Multicultural Affairs (OMA) and Outdoor Chattanooga are partnering for a special screening of the documentary, An American Ascent, about the first African American expedition to tackle Denali, North America's highest peak.

See the film for free on Thursday, February 11 at 5:30 p.m. at the Chattanooga Public Library (4th Floor) downtown. You will also get to meet Chattanooga's new group of multicultural, multilingual outdoor ambassadors.


February 18:  Navigate with Map & Compass

On which side of a tree does moss grow? Better not trust moss to way find, learn the basics of smart technology navigating using a map and compass. The free workshop will be taught by Alan Archer, former U.S. Marine and orienteering expert. The workshop is suitable for all ages. No reservations required, maps and compasses are provided.

February 25:  Wetland & Stream Restoration
 
Learn about mitigation projects, including the restoration and importance of their existence and how it relates to the health of wetlands and streams. Guest speaker Bill Phillips presents on the Green Corridor approach to wetland and stream restoration. Come and learn how these techniques are implemented at several of our cities largest new developments including Volkswagen, the Bass Pro project, the Standifer Gap wetlands, and more.

March 3: Adventure of Weather

Adventure is ahead, but what about the weather? Chillax, you can plan ahead and be prepared! Severe weather is right around the corner. No matter if you're at home, in the car, biking or on the nearest trail, storms come. Join News Channel 9 Meteorologist Brian Smith as he brings his explosive presentation about severe weather, myths and truths, and his experiences of being a storm chaser, hurricane chaser, and more.

Harrison Bay Star Party February 13

The Barnard Astronomical Society (BAS) will host their monthly Star Party at Harrison Bay State Park on Sat., Feb. 13 from 6 to 10 p.m. The BAS will have telescopes and binoculars available for attendees to observe the winter constellations and night-sky experts will be on hand to share their knowledge, tell stories and identify constellations. Stargazing begins at 6:00 p.m. and will last until 10 p.m. This event is FREE and everyone is welcome! In the event of inclement weather, this event will be repeated next month. Check the Facebook page for updates on the day of the event.

SORBA/Scott's Bikes Enterprise South Night Ride February 16

Join SORBA Chattanooga and Scott's Bicycle Centre Tuesday, February 16 for the last, after-hours night ride of 2016 at Enterprise South Nature Park. If you've never participated in a night ride, you're missing out! To participate, all riders must have proof of current SORBA/IMBA membership, bike, helmet, lights and $5 entry fee.
