Lady Flames Dominate In 73-47 Win Over Auburn Montgomery

  • Wednesday, December 7, 2016
The Lee women's basketball team made it five wins in a row as it used a dominating second half performance to cruise by Auburn Montgomery, 73-47 on Tuesday evening in Walker Arena.

The Lady Flames held a slim 22-18 lead at the half after shooting just 28 percent from the field but rolled out of the halftime break shooting 55.8 percent from the field while canning five treys to break the contest open.

The tide began to turn in the Lady Flames favor early in the third period as they fed Carrie Cheeks the ball in the post and let the junior standout go to work.
Cheeks, fresh off being named the GSC Player of the Week, delivered another double-double performance with 16 points to go along with 10 boards.

Freshman Taylor Boggess also tallied 16 points and was 6 of 10 from the field. Erin Walsh rounded out the double-figure scoring with 12 points while dishing off five assists and Abby Bertram, who was named GSC Freshman of the Week earlier in the day, shared the basketball for six assists.

Lee dominated in the post out rebounding the WarHawks, 54-28. The Lady Flames held a decisive 42-10 edge on points in the paint.

"We came out really slow and got a little loose with the ball in the first half against their zone. We also weren't really shooting the ball well so that caused us some issues early in the game," said assistant coach Jan Spangler. "In the second half though Taylor Boggess really stepped up and gave us a life and were able to get the ball inside to Carrie. The way she's been able to catch the ball in the paint and finish she's really improved her game in that area. She also is a tremendous rebounder and is so tough to defend with the way she runs the floor."

Kaylan Withrow had 11 points pace Auburn Montgomery. Anastasia Evans followed with seven while Aleksandra Trisic registered six points and eight rebounds.

The stingy Lady Flames defense held the WarHawks to just 28 percent shooting on the night. AUM converted only 16 field goals in the contest.

The win propels the Lady Flames to 6-1 on the season. The loss drops the WarHawks to 1-9 overall. The two old conference rivals will begin playing each other on a yearly basis once again starting next season as Auburn Montgomery is set to join the NCAA D2 ranks and the GSC.

"We want our team to finish strong academically and focus on finals and then we've got to refocus and realize that every day we need to get better," concluded Spangler.

Lee will get a little rest for final exams before heading back into conference play on Thursday, Dec. 15. The Lady Flames host Mississippi College before welcoming Delta State to Walker Arena on Saturday, Dec. 17.
