Chris Barr Speaks On National Parks At Elder Scholars Nov. 8

  • Monday, October 24, 2016

National Parks Ranger Chris Barr will speak on the U.S. National Parks at the Nov. 8 meeting of Elder Scholars.  The meeting will be held from 1-2:30 p.m. at UTC's University Center in the Signal Mountain Room.

Mr. Barr is an active National Parks ranger and is currently the Living History and Historic Weapons supervisor/interim volunteer coordinator at the Chickamauga and Chattanooga Battlefield.  He is a native of Americus, Ga. and grew up 15 miles away from the notorious Andersonville Civil War prison, which is now a National Historic Site.  He has a master’s degree in History Education and worked as a high school history teacher before joining the National Parks Service as an interpreter.  His interests include understanding divisive historical memory – how do we talk about a past that divided us and often continues to do so?  His research dives into Civil War prisons and the Modern Civil Rights Movement.

Membership in Elder Scholars is free to everyone over 55. Parking is free at UTC in Lot 7 at the corner of Douglas and East 5th Street or in the Fifth Street parking garage (high rise parking). When parking in either of these locations, place a copy of Elder Scholars flyer in the window of car.

Participants may meet at noon in the University Center for lunch, in the corner over by the windows, near the door facing Vine Street.
