Many photos of the Fairyland development on Lookout Mountain are featured in the new historic photo book being published by Chattanoogan.com.
Garnet and Frieda Carter carried out the fanciful development in the 1920s.
It was during the construction that the game of miniature golf was invented when a golf ball was hit through a drain pipe at the job site. It was first called Tom Thumb Golf.
Paul Hiener's Historic Chattanooga Photos is scheduled to be ready Monday.
Mr. Hiener, a longtime Chattanooga printer and lifelong resident, collected over 3,000 historic pictures of his beloved hometown. He made some of the photos available through a five-volume set called Chattanooga Yesterday and Today. The Hiener family in April 1985 donated the more than 3,000 historical Chattanooga photographs in his collection to the Chattanooga Public Library. They were eventually cataloged and are now viewable on the library's website.
This book, which is fully indexed, is a perfect companion to The Remarkable Stokes Collection previously published by Chattanoogan.com.
An edition of 1,500 copies of the 253-page Hiener book is being printed by College Press at Collegedale.
The photo book, which includes over 700 photos, is in an 11x8 1/2 format with a soft cover.
The price of the book is $35, which includes the sales tax.
This will reserve a copy or copies for later pickup at Zarzour's Restaurant on Rossville Avenue behind Fire Hall #1, which is on Main Street on the Southside.
For those who want it mailed, add $5 and list where copies should be mailed. Send checks for $40 made out to Chattanoogan.com.
