Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga in partnership with Thrivent Financial enabled a Chattanooga native and single father of two to achieve the American Dream on Saturday, just in time for Father’s Day.
“Being a homeowner is a dream that has come true thanks to Habitat for Humanity and Thrivent Financial,” said Kenneth “Kenney” McCullough. “My new home is the greatest gift I could ever receive for Father’s Day. I’m really excited and feel really, really blessed!”
Mr.
McCullough’s three-bedroom and two-bath home is in the Villages at Alton Park. It is the eighth Habitat home build by the Chattanooga Chapter of Thrivent Financial and the 254th home built by Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga Area since the organization was founded in 1986.
“For the past 14 months, we have witnessed Kenney’s determination and sacrifices to become a homeowner,” said David Butler, executive director of Habitat for Humanity. “Today, we celebrate Kenney and his great accomplishment.”
Habitat for Humanity chose to celebrate the completion of Mr. McCullough’s home the day before Father’s Day to dispel the perception that Habitat homes are only for families or women with children.
While Mr. McCullough is the father of two adult children and grandfather of six, his children live on their own. Officials said, "The beauty behind Habitat’s ministry is that Habitat only builds homes for deserving individuals and families who are in need and have completed the mandated requirements to become a Habitat homeowner."
The three criteria in which actually drive the family selection process include:
· A need for affordable housing
· The ability to pay the zero percent interest mortgage over a 30-year period
· Willingness to partner with Habitat for Humanity of Greater Chattanooga.
