Season Of Lent Observed At First Christian Church

  • Monday, February 16, 2015

Lent marks the final days of Jesus’ life and ministry. The season lasts for 40 days, beginning on Ash Wednesday though Holy Saturday, the day before Easter. First Christian Church will offer a special service on Ash Wednesday at 6:30 p.m. that will include the placing of ashes in the sign of the cross on foreheads of believers.

During Lent, sacrificial choices are emphasized as well. Choices may include dietary changes, giving to the poor, or relinquishing personal luxuries.

A recently formed group will be challenged to go through a Lent experience for the next 40 days that includes four different fasts. They will meet on Wednesday evenings beginning this week to discuss what they are learning and experience several ancient prayer methods: Lectio Divina, The Jesus Prayer, and Imaginative Prayer. All are welcome to experience this challenge.

Beth Dobyns, interim regional pastor of Tennessee, will be the special guest of the congregation on Sunday. She will be preaching in the worship service, using the Hebrew Bible text for the day, Genesis 9:8-17. Her sermon title is “Mud and Memory.” Services begin at 10:45 a.m.

Following the service, Rev. Dobyns will meet with the Search Committee who has been tasked with calling a new senior pastor. In the interim, Rev. Mark Calvert-Rosenberger has served as transitional pastor since September 2014, following the departure of former senior pastor Paul Rebelo in June 2014. Pastor Mark comes to First Christian with more than 33 years experience as a senior pastor and transitional minister. He holds a Master of Divinity from Vanderbilt University Divinity School.
