In addition to McCallie's nine National Merit Semifinalists, two more were named National Achievement Semifinalists, two more named Hispanic Scholars, and 12 named Commended Students.
Twelve current seniors were named Commended Students by the National Merit Scholarship Corporation. About 34,000 students throughout the nation are recognized for their exceptional academic promise for placing among the top 5 percent of the more than 1.5 million students who took the PSAT/NMSQT.
McCallie's dozen Commended Students are: Billy Boardman of Woodstock, Ga.; Ryan Clark of Dalton, Ga.; Addison Cornell of Chattanooga; Walker Dougherty of Louisville, Ky.; Carter Harbin of Dalton, Ga.; Daniel Johnston of Chapel Hill, N.C.; Nathan Liu of Ooltewah; J.J. Moncus of Dalton, Ga.; Michael Nwauche of Waxhau, N.C.; Kashish Patel of Chattanooga; Beau Sahaj of Signal Mountain, and Ben Worsham of Chattanooga.
Two McCallie seniors -- Ariel Bong of Ellenwood, Ga., and Michael Nwauche of Waxhau, N.C. -- were recently designated as National Achievement Semifinalists.
Roughly 1,600 African-American students nationwide are identified as Semifinalists each year. Some 1,300 will advance to the Finalist level and will compete for some 800 scholarship offers worth a combined $2.5 million.
Two McCallie seniors -- Weimer Macuri-Espinoza of Cleveland, Tenn., and J.J. Moncus of Dalton, Ga. -- were recently named National Hispanic Scholars.
Each year, the College Board honors roughly 5,000 of the highest-scoring students from the more than 250,000 Hispanic/Latino juniors who take the PSAT/NMSQT from the U.S. and surrounding areas.
