Erlanger’s downtown emergency room team treated 11 triathletes, six males and five females, competing in Sunday’s Ironman event. All 11 were treated and released by early Monday morning, according to Dr. Rob Hamilton, medical director of Erlanger Emergency Services.
Eight of the 11 brought to Erlanger’s downtown ER were involved in bicycle crashes, with injuries ranging from collarbone and wrist fractures, to closed head injuries, cuts, scratches and hip contusions. Three of the triathletes were treated for dehydration.
“It’s a real testament to the skill level of these athletes, event organizers, and to our ER team, that only 11 out of 2,300 participants required treatment at Erlanger’s ER - and none required hospitalization,” Dr. Hamilton said.
All of the 2,327 competitors who started the event finished the first leg of the race - the 2.4-mile swim downstream to Ross's Landing.
