Roscoe William Braxton, 80, died on August 26, 2014 at a local hospice facility. 

He graduated with bachelor’s degree at Tennessee State University and master’s degree from University of Tennessee in Knoxville. 

Roscoe was a veteran of the U.S. Army. He served as a teacher in the Georgia school system and Chattanooga school system from which he retired. He was co-owner and instructor at the Braxton Tutoring Center. He also worked at H & R Block and at Chickamauga Battlefield National Park as a Park Ranger and Guide. He also worked with Uniguard Security Agency as a security guard. Mr. Braxton also served on the CARTA Bus Board. 

Roscoe was a longtime member of Prospect Missionary Baptist Church.  During his membership there, he served as director of the Baptist Training Union, Sunday School teacher, deacon, chairman of the Deacon Board and Boy Scout leader.  In his past time he was an avid bowler and was a member of several bowling teams over the years.  He was a longtime sports enthusiast; playing on several senior basketball and softball teams for many years.  He was also a candidate for state representative.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. Willis R. Braxton and Carrie E. Wright Ramey; first wife, Donna Braxton; brothers, Jesse Braxton and Willis Braxton; sisters, Georgia L. Bright and Mary Stovall.

Roscoe Braxton’s love and compassion for others was well-known among family and friends.  His wisdom, congeniality and affable disposition will be deeply missed.

Survivors include his wife, Bettye Braxton, Chattanooga; sons, Emmett (Lynn) Braxton, Menifee, Ca.; Ronald (Kim) Braxton, Memphis; daughters, Jami Shepard, Hyattsville, Md.; Lori Shepard, Los Angeles; grandchildren, Sparkle Shepard, Hyattsville, Md.; Alyssa Braxton (Matt) Tudor, Nashville; Andrea Braxton, Baltimore; Angel, John Braxton, Memphis; Amber Braxton, Eunice, MS; great- grandchildren, Isaiah Shepard, Hyattsville, Md.; sister, Eva Oldham, Clarksville, Tn.;  special sister-in-law, Ruth Grady; cousins, June Brooks, Chicago; Howard Brooks, Evansville, In.; and a host of nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 11 a.m. at Prospect Missionary Baptist Church with Reverend Jay Trimble officiating.  Interment will be in National Cemetery.

The body will lie in state after noon on Sunday and the family will receive friends from 6–7 p.m. on Sunday at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
