With no champions, yet good depth, host McCallie won the 34th annual McCallie Wrestling Invitational Tournament Saturday with 223 points followed by runner-up Union Grove (196) and third place Cleveland (186.5) in the 27-team field.

In winning a record eighth team title, McCallie had runners-up in James Westbrooks (126) and Brock Herring (132), plus three thirds and a pair of fourths.

Twelve of the 14 wrestlers scored points including six who sclored 20 or more points.

“Our depth definitely won it for us and the five guys who lost in the semis stepped up to take three thirds and two fourths to win big matches,” said McCallie head wrestling coach Mike Newman.

“A good example of our guys stepping up in the consolation rounds was Will Patton who after losing in the morning semis, beat two guys in the afternoon who had beaten him last weekend.”

No Individual Champs –But a Team Title: In 1988, Soddy Daisy won with no first place medals and Brother Martin (La.) won it all in 1990 with no champs.
