Covenant Women Fall To Piedmont 1-0

  • Wednesday, October 29, 2014

Facing a top conference foe on the road, the Covenant women's soccer team hung tough, but ultimately fell to Piedmont 1-0 on Wednesday night.

The loss drops the Lady Scots to 7-4 in USA South conference play, while they end the regular season with an overall record of 9-9-1.

Piedmont finishes up their regular season with a 14-4-1 record and are now tied with Meredith for the top spot in the USA South, but will have the second seed in the conference tournament due to the fact that Meredith holds the tiebreaker.

Erin Bright provided the only offense of the match with an unassisted first half goal in the 43rd minute for the Lions. This was despite the fact that Covenant had a 4-2 advantage in shots on goal during the first period.

Piedmont keeper Micheala Gardner made five saves to get the shutout for Piedmont. Lucy Johnson gave up one goal on two shots in the first half for Covenant, and finished the night with seven saves. Ruth Terry and Bethany Logan each had two shots on goal for the Lady Scots, but were unable to convert.

Covenant will be slotted in the sixth spot for the conference tournament, beginning this Saturday. They will face third-seeded Methodist at 2:30 p.m. in Fayetteville, N.C., for a chance to travel to Virginia for the conference semifinals next weekend. In their only meeting this year, the Lady Scots fell to the Monarchs 3-1 on the road back on October 10.
