The Southwest Tennessee baseball team topped the Cleveland State Cougars by a run to open the region tournament.
Cleveland State lost 4-3 dropping them down to the loser's bracket.
Logan Luckett drove in the first two runs of the game putting the Saluqis up in the top of the third.
Evan Goins brought home Bryson Trammell on a ground out to second to cut the lead in half in the bottom of the fourth. Then Riley Orr doubled in the bottom of the sixth to bring Trammell home for the second time to tie the game.
Southwest Tennessee scored two more in the top of the seventh with Luckett driving in another. He went 2-3 on the game with three RBI.
In the bottom half of the seventh Cannon Stafford singled home Hunter Ryan, but that would be the Cougars final run.
Despite striking out 12 batters, Cooper Casteel (5-2) suffered the loss going 6.2 innings allowing three earned runs on five hits while walking four. Hayden Collins (2-2) earned the victory with Brayden Stewart picking up the save.
Next up for Cleveland State is an elimination game against the top seed Walters State.
The Cleveland State softball team could not get past the Pioneers in their opening round game.
Volunteer State scored 10 runs with the Cougars putting up four.
All of Cleveland State's runs came off of homers with Ava Layne, Morgan Willingham and Carissa Montgomery each putting the ball over the fence. Willingham went 3-3 on the game and was also on base scoring on Montgomery's two-run blast.
The Pioneers had just two extra base hits, but strung together 13 singles to produce their double-digit offensive performance.
Kylie Hayes (14-9) suffered the loss pitching the complete game. Laura Walker (W, 12-7) pitched the final three innings for Volunteer State picking up the win.
Next up now for the Cougars is an elimination game against the Green Jays from Jackson State.
