Soddy Daisy and Signal Mountain both won their semifinal games in the District 6-AAA baseball tournament in two straight games on Wednesday and Thursday, setting the stage for the championship game at Red Bank Friday night.
These two teams split their two regular-season games with Signal winning 5-0 at Soddy Daisy before the Trojans returned the favor by a 10-5 final the next night at Signal.
Soddy Daisy won the district regular-season title and is currently 29-6 while Signal Mountain entered Friday’s play at 23-8. Oh, it’s been a dandy so far, but it isn’t over as the game was suspended for lightning and heavy rain with out in the bottom of the sixth with the Trojans batting.
A two-run triple by Keith Scoggins put a runner at third with one out as Soddy Daisy had scored three runs in that last at-bat and were trailing 9-7 when play was suspended.
The rain came quickly, so the infield was quickly a lake and obviously unplayable. After a meeting with both head coaches, the umpiring crew and Red Bank coach/tournament director Matt Carpenter, the decision was made to check field conditions on Saturday morning.
If possible and with no more rain falling, the hope is to wrap up the last inning-plus at 3. If that plan fails, then it would be finished on Sunday afternoon at one.
