Charles "Charlie" Alvin Carnes, passed away peacefully at age 92 at his home on April 26, 2024. He was surrounded by children and grandchildren who were blessed to have a loving father and grandfather who taught us what unconditional love is.

Charlie graduated from Red Bank High School in 1949 and enrolled in the Navy. He married the love of his life, Betty June Campbell, in 1951. Charlie first met her in 4th grade and decided he was going to marry her. Like most things he decided to do in his life, he was successful. They had a wonderful and blessed marriage for 60 years before her passing in 2012. After four years of Navy service, they moved to Knoxville, Tennessee where he earned his bachelor’s degree in accounting from the University of Tennessee. After working in public accounting for a few years, Walter Forbes, Sr. hired him at Signal Thread Company where he worked until his retirement. Mr. Forbes was a great mentor and friend to him.

Faith and family were the most important things in Dad’s life. He was a Christian and servant leader who served as a deacon and elder for many years at Hixson Church of Christ, and most recently worshiped at Clear Creek Church of Christ. We learned Dad’s love for family as we watched him care for both of his parents as they aged. Anyone who knew him realized that he had a passion for his wife, three children, seven grandchildren, and nine great-grandchildren.

Charlie had a gift of making others feel better. Whether it was greeting folks at church, helping those in need, mentoring a young person, or giving a smile to a stranger, he had a gift of encouragement and friendship. He made others feel valued and loved.

He is survived by his three children, Jeff Carnes (Annette), Jennie Berry (Steve), and Greg Carnes (Jan), grandchildren, (Micah Mynatt (Trent), Meredith Berry, Taylor Berry, Kaitlin Carlson (Jared), Benjamin Carnes (Casey), Will Carnes (Mallory), and Clay Carnes (Annalynn), and great-grandchildren, (Hudson Mynatt, Asher Mynatt, Fynn Carlson, Rhys Carlson, Myles Carlson, Ella Carnes, Noah Carnes, Anderson Carnes, and Evelyn Carnes).

Charlie was preceded in death by his wife, (Betty), his parents, (Floyd Odis and Nina Pearl Carnes), and his three brothers (Floyd, Wesley, and J.D.).

Visitation will be on Wednesday, May 1, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. with the funeral at 1 p.m. in the Chapel at Hamilton Funeral Home on Hixson Pike. Interment will be in Hamilton Memorial Gardens on Highway 153.

We want to thank Ardent Senior Care and Hearth Hospice for the care that they provided during the last year.
