William Clayton Poe, Jr. passed away peacefully on April 17, 2024.

He was surrounded by his wife and children. Clayton was born in Chattanooga, Tennessee on March 19, 1971.

Clayton worked for Cummins Sales and Service as an account executive and was employed there for nearly 25 years. He enjoyed meeting with his customers and considered his co-workers to be friends. When asked what their dad did for a living, the children used to say, “My dad drives around talking to people and going to lunch.”

Clayton was a charismatic man who never met a stranger. He filled the room with his boisterous voice and enjoyed sharing words of wisdom about history, the bible, politics, and life. Clayton was a master scuba diver and traveled to many beautiful locations where he relished the splendor and quiet of the underwater world.

Clayton was of the Baptist denomination and is now with his Lord and Savior where he is no longer in pain. He was saved and would talk to you about his testimony if given the chance. He had a heart for others and considered it a gift to bless others anonymously. Clayton was the type of man who would discretely buy a meal for a young couple he saw say the blessing in a Cracker Barrel, or a service person enjoying a breakfast at Waffle House.

Clayton set family apart from everything else and enjoyed creating opportunities to spend time together. He leaves behind to cherish his memory his wife and children, his beloved pup, and a very cool cat who will miss him every day.

Clayton is preceded in death by his grandparents, Doris and Charles Thompson, Jewel and Ed Poe, his father, William Clayton Poe, Sr., and his aunts, Kathy Rutherford and Deborah Croft.

Clayton is survived by his wife, Dawn, his children: Tyler (Mae), Trip, Jackson, all of Harrison, TN, his daughter Stephany of Chattanooga, step-son, Logan, brother, Chad (Lacy) and mother. He also leaves behind brother and sisters-in-law, two nephews, three nieces, Aunt Susan, cousins, Carla, Zachary, and Ward, along with several extended family members.

A celebration of life will be held at Hamilton Funeral Home in Hixson, on April 27. Visitation will be from 12-2 p.m. with service immediately following at 2 p.m. with Donald Ramsey officiating.

In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you consider a donation to the International Board of Jewish Missions as he was an avid supporter.
