Abby Bertram scored 11 points and grabbed six rebounds in Sunday's road win at West Florida.
The Lee women’s basketball team set a new program record on Sunday afternoon with a 54-36 win over rival University of West Florida. The victory was the 11th straight for Coach Marty Rowe’s club and broke the old mark of 10 straight wins set during the 1998-99 season. The Lady Flames improved to 11-0 and 3-0 in GSC.
The Lady Flames got off to a slow start in the opening 20 minutes but still led 26-19 at the half. “We are glad to get out of Pensacola with a win. Give (West Florida) Coach (Stephanie) Yelton credit, she had her team ready to play and honestly they out-played us in the first half,” said Coach Rowe.
Lee outscored the Argonauts 21-11 in the third frame and led 47-30.
The defense took control in the final period and held West Florida to just six points. “Our energy was much better in the second half, especially on the offensive glass and defensively. It was a good road win, not the prettiest, but we will take it,” explained Rowe.
Sophomore Haley Schubert paced the Lady Flames scoring with 18 points. She made 6-of-13 shots from the field, hit 5-of-6 free throws, had three steals and grabbed three rebounds. Senior Abby Bertram followed with 11 points. She led her team with four assists and pulled down six rebounds. Senior Taylor Boggess connected on a pair of 3-pointers and finished the afternoon with 10 points.
Lee captured the rugged rebounding battle 42-35. Senior Nicky Widenski pulled eight caroms off the glass. Sophomore Camryn Grant and red-shirt sophomore Maddie Long claimed five boards each. The Lady Flames shot 36 percent from the field and the defense held West Florida to only 28 percent shooting.
Danielle Norquest was tops for the Argonauts. She finished with a double-double, 11 points and 11 rebounds. She also came away with four steals. However, she was the only West Florida player in double-figure scoring. The Argos were guilty of 21 floor mistakes against the consistent Lee defense. The Lady Flames had 17 turnovers.
The road trip continues for the Lady Flames on Tuesday when they face Valdosta State University. The Blazers were beaten by Alabama Huntsville on Sunday, 64-58. Lee returns home for its final game before the Christmas break, hosting Christian Brothers in the first game of a doubleheader on Saturday at 2 p.m.
