Dalton State To Host Presentation On Social Media Affecting Employment

  • Friday, January 19, 2018

The public is invited to learn more about the lasting consequences of social media posts at “Social Media: How will it Affect My Employment Search?” on Wednesday, Jan. 31 from 3-4 p.m. in room 105 of the James E. Brown Center at Dalton State. The panel discussion is hosted by Dalton State’s Wright School of Business and by the Dalton State Foundation. The event is free and open to the public.

"It’s easy for a quick post or casual photo added to social media sites to have negative and long-term effects on a person’s job prospects. People aren’t always aware of the negative image such posts may have and how they live forever online," organizers said.

“We want all our DSC students and area business professionals alike to understand the impact of their digital presence on initial employment and future career advancement,” said Dr. Marilyn Helms, dean of the Wright School of Business. “The audience will learn how human resource managers and talent acquisition specialists search social media as part of their hiring and employee screening process. The current business climate is extremely sensitive to what employees and potential employees might say and do that could adversely harm a company and its reputation in the marketplace. Students must understand the importance of social media to their professional future.”

The panel of presenters will be led by Professor Mary Ann Sasser, a part-time professor of human resources at Dalton State, and human resources professionals from Shaw Industries, Textile Rubber and Chemical Company and Randstad.  An opportunity to network with the panelists will follow the discussion.
