Longtime Businessman Was Former Chairman Of The Tennessee U.S. Savings Bond Committee

John "Jack" Terry Pollock, Sr., of Lookout Mountain, Georgia died peacefully at his home on September 20, 2016, surrounded by family and caregivers. 

He was born on Oct. 27, 1925, in Jackson, Ms. He attended Staunton Military Academy in Virginia and graduated from Biloxi High School. Shortly thereafter he joined the United States Army. Following World War II, Jack attended Colgate University. He married Camilla Maloney from Elmira, NY in 1950.

Mr. Pollock began his career with Thatcher Glass Company working his way from a summer clerk to purchasing manager, vice president of manufacturing and was later named president of the company in 1971. In 1975, Pollock accepted the position of president of the Chattanooga Glass Company in Chattanooga. After quickly turning around Chattanooga Glass, Pollock was named Chairman and CEO of parent company Dorsey Corporation which held the bottling company, a tractor trailer division, a chain of restaurants and a small plastic bottle start-up. Pollock retired from the company in 1988, but remained as board chair, installing long time friend and 50 year business associate, Charles Casey as president and CEO. The two divested all divisions of the company except the plastic container division which later became Constar International, with headquarters in Chattanooga, the largest plastic bottle manufacturing company in the world. 

Pollock sat on the board of 20th Century Fox during the second golden age of cinema while the company produced films such as Star Wars, Blazing Saddles, and nudged the company into it’s first Broadway production of The Wiz which later won nine Tony Awards including best musical of 1975. In 1982, then Secretary of the Treasury, Donald Regan named Pollock chairman of the State of Tennessee U.S Savings Bond Committee. He also served as a board member of First Tennessee National Bank. Pollock’s accomplishments were featured in The Wall Street Journal, Financial World, Forbes, Fortune and others. Jack’s wife Camilla died in 1992. Pollock married Millie Guerry of Lookout Mountain in 1993. The two had homes on Lookout Mountain and in Jupiter, Florida. He was a life long golfer at Westchester Golf Club in Rye, NY, the Lookout Mountain Golf Club and the Loxahatchee Club in Jupiter, FL and the Honors Course in Ooltewah. He was a devout Catholic and member of Our Lady of the Mount Catholic Church.

He was preceded in death by his father, Franklin B. Pollock of Holmby Hills, CA, mother, Katherine Terry of Biloxi, MS, and brother, Robert Pollock of Dallas, TX.

He is survived by wife Millie, sister Penny Pollock of Highlands, NC, daughter Patrica (Edward) Haley of Charlotte, NC, sons John T. Pollock, Jr. (Sherry) of Lookout Mountain, TN, Frank D. Pollock (Julie) of Bluffton, SC and Michael M. Pollock (Georgianna) of Lookout Mountain, GA, eight grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Millie and Jack have been faithfully and lovingly attended to by the wonderful caregivers at McAllister Personal Care Consultants of Lookout Mountain, GA.

There will be a private family service on  Friday, Sept. 23.
