Gregory L. Kirton, 59, was killed, and his wife critically injured, in an accident on Amnicola Highway on Sunday afternoon.

Timothy J. Nerren, 36, is charged with running a red light and causing his death.

The Chattanooga Police Department responded to a crash around 3:20 p.m. involving two vehicles at 4400 Amnicola Highway.

A silver sedan, driven by Mr. Kirton, was exiting from Highway 153 (southbound) onto Amnicola Highway. The sedan was struck by a blue Jeep, driven by Nerren, traveling southbound on Amnicola Highway. The sedan was hit in the driver's side door.

Chattanooga Police were the first on the scene and immediately notified Hamilton County EMS. Mr. Kirton was deceased upon police arrival, as well as entrapped in the vehicle.

A passenger of the sedan, the victim's wife Vivana Kirton, was transported to Erlanger with incapacitating injuries. She was taken to the Intensive Care Unit.

Police were on the way to a report of an impaired person on the lot at 4901 Bonny Oaks Dr. when they came upon the crash on Amnicola Highway. They said Nerren was apparently the person on Bonny Oaks Drive who had made his way to Amnicola Highway.

Police said he performed field-sobriety tests poorly at the wreck scene.

Nerren refused medical treatment, and was interviewed as part of the investigation. He was then arrested and charged with DUI, vehicular homicide by impairment, and a red light violation.
