Young visitors watch as Tennessee American Water employees make the connection for the temporary pipe on the Walnut Street Bridge
Tennessee American Water put into service the new pipe underneath the Tennessee River on Wednesday. The temporary pipe on Walnut Street Bridge and the detour and barricades had been removed Friday evening, April 15, in preparation for the weekend pedestrian traffic.
On Monday, April 4, Tennessee American Water identified a leak in a pipe underneath the Tennessee River that delivers water to North Chattanooga. The company immediately mobilized resources to begin restoring the line, officials said. While this repair took place, a temporary water pipe was laid across the Walnut Street Bridge for additional water delivery to the area.
Valoria Armstrong, president of Tennessee American Water, said, “We know that the repair of the river pipe presented challenges, particularly the installation of the temporary pipe on the Northshore area. We appreciate the cooperation the community showed.
“I also want to acknowledge our employees, Hixson Utility District, Eastside Utility District, Stein Construction, Heritage Landing Homeowners Association, Keystone Clearwater Solutions, Consolidated Pipe & Supply and the city of Chattanooga for all their work and support in the successful completion of this critical project.”
Tennessee American Water pulled nearly 1,600 feet of pipe weighing 113,000 pounds from one river bank to the other.
