The next concert in the Performing Arts Series at Lee University will feature the Birmingham Boys Choir in the Lee Chapel on Sunday, April 10, at 4 p.m.
The choir, under the direction of Ken Berg, will perform famous patriotic songs such as F. S. Key’s “National Anthem.” They will also perform various hymns and spirituals such as “Amazing Grace,” “All Things Bright and Beautiful,” and “Jesus, Lover of My Soul,” among others.
“We are excited about having the Birmingham Boys Choir here at Lee University,” said Dr. Jonathan Rodgers, assistant professor of choral music. “It is a wonderful opportunity to have such a choir here on campus, as this is not something we are accustomed to on a regular basis.”
On Monday, April 11, and Tuesday, April 12, Mr. Berg will stay and speak in a variety of classes in Lee’s School of Music, drawing on his nearly 40 years of experience as an educator, conductor, and church musician.
A choral workshop will occur on Monday, April 11, at 3 p.m. in Room 223 in the Curtsinger Music Building. At 6 p.m., there will be a rehearsal demonstration choir, featuring the Lee University Children’s and Lake Forest Middle School Choirs in the Curtsinger choral rehearsal room.
The Birmingham Boys Choir has been around for over 50 years. It is a nonprofit, civic organization built in order to allow talented boys in the greater Birmingham area an opportunity to more fully develop their gifts in an area of concentrated study.
In 2015, the choir toured Germany and the Czech Republic. Its next tour will occur in the American Northwest in June 2017.
Mr. Berg and his wife Susan have been training boys and young men in the art of singing for over 30 years.
