Dalton police arrested 22-year-old Gabriel Campos Tuesday evening after he fired a handgun into the air during a road rage incident near downtown. Campos, of #6 Kirk Street in Calhoun, Ga., is charged with assault, aggressive driving, driving with a suspended license, reckless conduct, and discharging a weapon on a public street.
The incident happened at approximately 5:30 p.m. on South Thornton Avenue near the 900 block in the area of the BB&T bank. Campos was driving northbound in his blue Nissan 350Z when another driver in a white Dodge pickup truck began to tailgate him. Campos apparently became agitated and slowed down. Police said it is unclear which driver “flipped the bird” first, but after both drivers flipped each other off Campos reportedly displayed a chrome and black .380 handgun to the other driver. Campos then fired a shot into the air. The other driver called 911.
Officers responding stopped Campos at Morris Innovative High School at Fort Hill and performed a felony traffic stop. Campos was taken into custody without incident.
This incident is still being investigated. Anyone who witnessed the incident is asked to please contact Officer Jason Robinson at 706 278-9085, dial 9, and enter extension 180.
