Chattanooga loves its tribute bands, as evidenced by the crowds at Track 29, the Revelry Room, and many other venues that feature them on occasion. There is a tribute band for just about every major act in the history of music. Neil Young is no different. The problem with finding a good Neil Young tribute band is matching the voice. Young’s alto voice is a hard one to even attempt. Without the voice, the songs lose their heritage and allure. Enter Michael McDade and Lazy Horse.
Michael, one of Chattanooga’s most established and proficient musicians, accurately depicts the unique voice of Neil Young very well. It’s not a dead-on copy and I think Michael would agree, but it isn’t necessary. Besides, some subtle differences help to make the band unique and entertaining. But, I will tell you one thing for sure – it’s darn good. The crowd was seriously into the music and anxiously awaited each new song as if to see if it too was possible to play well.
The band consists of Michael McDade on lead vocals and guitar, Brent Sanders plays the bass guitar, Bill Lefton on keyboards, Ryan Oyer on guitar, and Michael Salter on drums.
My suggestion is simple. If you like Neil Young, then by all means, go see these guys. You will like them. That’s a fact.
Opening for Lazy Horse was Webb Barringer. Another perfect match, as Webb entertained a crowd that consisted of Neil Young fans, without playing Neil Young music. I like it when the opener and the featured act match up well. It always struck me as odd when you have a Country singer opening for a heavy metal band, or something along those lines.
