Tennessee Medical Association Brings Leadership Training To Area Physicians

  • Wednesday, January 20, 2016

The Tennessee Medical Association is delivering new leadership training programs to help physicians and healthcare organizations adapt to the emerging team-based environment, value-based reimbursement and increasing focus on quality and efficiency in healthcare delivery. Participants in the new Physician Leadership Lab began classes last month.

TMA recognizes that physicians with leadership skills and training are in demand as healthcare moves toward a more team-based delivery model. Its leadership offerings are designed to help physicians who want to prepare themselves for the changing medical landscape and healthcare organizations that want to groom leaders, said officials.

This year, the former TMA Physician Leadership College was expanded and repackaged with two new courses under the brand of the John Ingram Institute for Physician Leadership. John J. Ingram III, MD, helped create the PLC nearly a decade ago.

The two new programs within the Ingram Institute include an intensive leadership retreat and the Physician Leadership Lab.

The multi-month Leadership Lab is a partnership between the Tennessee Medical Association and the Tennessee Medical Education Fund, Inc. It is a mix of online webinars and in-person classes. Each participant will implement an improvement project in his or her own practice as part of the course.

A total of 29 doctors from across the state are taking part in the inaugural class of the Leadership Lab. The Leadership Lab is a leadership training program which focuses on the Lean Healthcare model.

Taking the course are three doctors from the Chattanooga-Hamilton County Medical Society: Justin Calvert, MD, Chattanooga, Jacob Dowden, MD, Chattanooga, and Chetan Shah, MD, Hixson.

Program graduation is scheduled to take place on July 15 as part of a TMA Board of Trustees meeting in Nashville.
