Joseph Wayne Reid, Sr., 69, died on Thursday, September 24, 2015 at his residence in Chattanooga, Tennessee. 

He was the last of the eleven children born to the late Reverend Robert H. and Alpha O. Reid on March 5, 1946 in Paducah, Ky.

Because his father was an itinerant pastor in the AME Church, Joe, as he was affectionately called, lived in Louisville, Ky. and Knoxville. He finally made his home in Chattanooga in 1956.

Joe attended the public school systems of Knoxville, Tennessee and Chattanooga.  He graduated from Riverside High School in 1964 where he lettered in sports. After high school, Joe attended Cleveland State Community College in Cleveland.

Joe fulfilled his lifelong dream of a being a police officer as he  served as a police officer with the Chattanooga City Police Department where he retired with distinction as a Lieutenant. He also did security with the Leader Clothing Store and the Red Food Stores. He was also supervisor with the Chattanooga Lookouts and the Hamilton County Juvenile Courts. He was highly respected by his superiors as well as his staff.

Joe was a member of NOBLEE (National Organization of Black Law Enforcement Executives) as well as the Free and Accepted Masons.

Joe accepted Christ at an early age and when his father become a presiding elder, he joined Bethel, where he remained until his death.

Joe married Shirley Wiley on May 14, 1966, and to this union his son, Joseph Jr. was born.

Joe was preceded in death by his parents, Rev. and Mrs. R. H. Reid, Sr.; his brothers, Robert, Harry, Walter, Lloyd, Wendell and Clyde.

Joe is survived by his son, Joseph, Jr.; sister, Lenora M. Dorris, Cincinnati; his brothers, Wesley (Kathy), Cleveland, OH; three grandchildren: his former wife, Shirley Reid; five sisters-in-law; nieces, nephews, cousins; a special dear friend, Earline Baker; and a host of friends.

Funeral services will be held at 1 p.m. at Bethel AME Church on Tuesday, Sept. 29. Interment will be in Lakewood Memory Gardens-East.

The body will lie in state after noon on Monday, Sept. 28, and the family will receive friends from 7-8 p.m. at John P. Franklin Funeral Home, 1101 Dodds Ave., 622-9995.
