Special agents from the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation have arrested a Morgan County woman accused of shooting her husband on Friday.

At the request of 9th District Attorney General Russell Johnson, TBI special agents began investigating the incident, which occurred shortly after 5 p.m. at the family’s home on Morgan County Highway in Sunbright.

There, authorities found 61-year-old Leroy James Smith, Jr. suffering from a gunshot wound.

During the course of the investigation, agents, with the assistance of the Sunbright Police Department and the Morgan County Sheriff’s Office, developed information that led to Smith’s wife, Jennifer Darlene Smith, as the individual responsible for the incident. Medics subsequently transported Leroy Smith to UT Medical Center in Knoxville for treatment.

On Friday evening, authorities arrested the 39-year-old and charged her with one count of attempted second-degree murder.

She was being held in the Morgan County Jail on a $100,000 bond.
