A fifth person has died from Thursday's tragic shooting in Chattanooga carried out by a 24-year-old Hixson man.

Randall Smith, a logistics specialist with the Navy, had been fighting for his life at Erlanger Hospital.

The Navy said he died at 2:17 a.m.

He had suffered three gunshot wounds, including to the right arm, back and stomach, with damage to his liver and colon, family members had told the Salina (Kansas) Journal. His mother, Paula Proxmire, is from Ottawa County, Kan.

Family members had come to Chattanooga after getting word of the shooting at the Naval and Marine Support Center off Amnicola Highway by the Riverpark.

He underwent surgery later Thursday. Officials later said he was "in very serious condition."

He and his wife, Angie Smith, have three young daughters with the oldest being six. He was in his mid-20s.

Navy Petty Officer 2nd Class Smith was living in Ohio when he joined the Navy. Family members said he had re-enlisted and been assigned to Chattanooga.

Four Marines were dead at the scene of the attack that began with multiple shots fired on a military recruitment office at a strip mall on Lee Highway seven miles away.

Chattanooga Police Officer Dennis Pedigo is recovering from a shot to the leg.
