A Chattanooga State 50th anniversary T-shirt will be placed on the Phillip D. Glass icon at the Tennessee American Water Co. on Amnicola on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
Tennessee American Water President Deron Allen said, "We are honored to play a part in Chattanooga State's 50th Anniversary year with the unveiling of a new shirt for 'Phillip D. Glass.' Chattanooga State plays an important role in our community providing educational and training opportunities and this is an important milestone in their history."
Perched atop the Tennessee American Water tank that faces a highway in Chattanooga, Phillip D. Glass is an icon in the community. He is a large metal cut out of a Tennessee American Water employee who tips his hard hat at motorists passing by while greeting them with, "Good Morning Chattanooga," which is painted on the tank. His name is marked by a label on the pocket of his shirt.
In 1989, Phillip D. Glass was a way to put a face on the century-old company, said officials. He got his name through a local radio show call-in contest and the two finalists were "Phillip D. Glass" and "Hank the Tank." The name Phillip D. Glass won out and he’s greeted Chattanooga commuters ever since.
